I woke up one day to find everyone was going crazy about Pokémon Go. After a few days and I don’t understand all the fuss behind it so I just managed to do some research to understand what it is and how it works.

Pokémon Go surely has opened a new area of augmented reality games, bringing fictional characters to real life. On one hand, I can understand why people think it is so great as they get to be in the action. On the other hand, I find it sad. Like we don’t have enough people constantly on their phone already, now more people on the street are gonna be staring at their phone. Way to go Pokémon Go.

For couch potato gamers, yeah you might think it is good for them to go out and exercise. Exercise really? It is sad even when they are outside, they have to look at real life through augmented reality lens.

Several privacy concerns have been raised by developers against the terms and conditions of the game. The app actually has access to your Google account, which means your email, Google Drive documents, browser, etc.  Warnings against trespassing, robberies, crimes have been issued. A dead body has been found and several incidents of injuries and traffic accidents have been reported because players were so absorbed in the games that they weren’t looking where they were going.

And this is just the beginning, more augmented reality games are on their way. I wonder what it will be like to go on the street in the next few years. I just thought of giving up my smartphone. I miss my hardcore Nokia 8210. Then when I go out on the street, I will be looking up and around, while people down and at the phone.

I am not a gamer, I have never been. This is just my thoughts as an observer. But gamers, stay safe, look up, and don’t forget to live your real reality.
